On Sunday, an Alameda, CA based software company chartered an Amtrak special to Mount Shasta for its employees. The vintage passenger cars were pulled by a single GE P42DC (AMTK 67) as train 976. The passenger car list was (front to back): Pony Express, Silver Lariat, Plaza Santa Fe, Silver Rapids and the Silver Solarium. Our chase begins at Castella Creek and continues to Dunsmuir, Mott and finally Mount Shasta. Enjoy the photos!

A pair of former Rio Grande GP40-2s worked the Folsom Turn tonight so my boys and I spent a couple hours following it. It was great seeing the black and orange rockin down the line.

The Southern Pacific box car fleet is slowly dwindling so I get shots of them as any train goes by. I do this for other fallen flags too as you can judge by the other updates for Western Pacific, Rio Grande, etc. There are many good examples remaining but not many clean ones. Graffiti becomes more prominent, one example in this update is completely covered. Former Golden West Service cars are being relettered back to their original SP, SSW and DRGW reporting marks so some of those are also included.

This week's update focuses on the Western Pacific. Mostly freight cars (since that's a majority of what's left roaming the rails) and the UP 1983 WP heritage locomotive at Roseville, CA.

Last weekend while driving north from Sacramento on Interstate 5, my son and I stopped at Woodland to see if the California Northern was in town. We found an idle SW1500 so we took a quick photo and continued our journey north. After a few minutes we saw headlights which turned out to be the Cal Norhtern job on its way back to Woodland. We jumped off the freeway and chased it down at Harrington. They were making a pickup at Conrad Forest Products (see photo with the old concrete SP telephone booth) and got on their way in a hurry. I'm working on the photos from the rest of our trip up to the Shasta area. Stay tuned!

This week's update focuses on the McCloud Railway. I've always been interested in this operation and go out of my way to photograph anything to do with the McCloud Rwy. The photos included are some of the old box cars, Centerbeam flat cars, and SD38s 37 and 38. In addition, last week a new book was released covering the history of railroads in this area. Rails Around McCloud was written by Jeff Moore and contains many great photos and history of the area. You can read more about the book on the publisher's website at the following link: Arcadia Publishing
